It’s exactly a year since the Pulse shooting so I wanna give a dedicated shout out to the Latinx lgbt+ community who were directly targeted last year, but continued to stay strong and resilient and are still here celebrating and showing pride with us. I hope you’re all having a safe and wonderful pride month

Just a friendly and much needed reminder that Pride Month is not just for the cis white gay boys that have become the physical representation of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s also for the black trans bisexuals, the Asian lesbians, the Hispanic pansexuals, and the biracial asexuals. It is for EVERYONE who is so often ignored and forgotten about, and it is really important to remember that. Representation of all the orientations matters.

what if i told you that a lot of “Americanized” versions of foods were actually the product of immigrant experiences and are not “bastardized versions”

That’s actually fascinating, does anyone have any examples?

Chinese-American food is a really good example of this and this article provides a good intro to the history http://firstwefeast.com/eat/2015/03/illustrated-history-of-americanized-chinese-food

I took an entire class about Italian American immigrant cuisine and how it’s a product of their unique immigrant experience. The TL;DR is that many Italian immigrants came from the south (the poor) part of Italy, and were used to a mostly vegetable-based diet. However, when they came to the US they found foods that rich northern Italians were depicted as eating, such as sugar, coffee, wine, and meat, available for prices they could afford for the very first time. This is why Italian Americans were the first to combine meatballs with pasta, and why a lot of Italian American food is sugary and/or fattening. Italian American cuisine is a celebration of Italian immigrants’ newfound access to foods they hadn’t been able to access back home.

you wanna see some badass shit from the early 20th century?? The Lumière brothers created the first full color photograph… in fucking 1903! So these dudes dyed potatoes (in red, blue, and green), mashed them down into just pure fuckin’ starch, and used these dyed potato starches as filters to block out/let in certain wavelengths of light. They coated one side of a glass plate with the starches and sensitized the other side with a mixture of gelatin and light sensitive materials (silver nitrate) and loaded these plates in their cameras.. This is a really simple explanation of the process and I may have missed some things
